HISTORY OF BARANGAY BAGONTAPAY

Barangay Bagontapay is one of the many vibrant local government units found within the Municipality of M’lang, in the province of Cotabato, Mindanao. Though small in size, this barangay carries with it a history that speaks of resilience, growth, and a deep connection to the land.

The story of Bagontapay began in 1948, when Angelo Española, a determined settler in search of a new beginning, made this area his home. Recognized as the first settler of Barangay Bagontapay, Española laid down the roots of a community that would continue to grow and thrive in the decades to come.

The name Bagontapay holds a unique place in the hearts of locals. It originated from a large tree that once stood proudly in the area — a natural landmark that served as a guidepost for travelers and residents alike. In those early days, people would say, “If you’ve passed by the big tree, you’ve reached Bagontapay.” Though the tree may no longer stand today, its memory continues to mark the barangay’s history.

Today, this modest but tight-knit barangay covers a total land area of 1,204.98 hectares. Over the years, it has steadily grown, with the population increasing from 7,121 in 2020 to 7,404 in 2025 — a testament to the barangay’s enduring appeal as a peaceful and welcoming place to live.

Barangay Bagontapay is made up of 16 smaller communities known as ‘puroks.’ These clusters of households are more than just residential areas; they’re close-knit neighborhoods where families celebrate life’s milestones together, neighbors lend a helping hand, and traditions are passed down through generations.

From its humble beginnings marked by a single towering tree to the thriving community it has become today, Barangay Bagontapay remains a place defined by its history, its people, and its unwavering sense of community.
